ABOUT THE CITY OF OTTAWA

The capital city of Canada, Ottawa has a population of 934,243, making it the fourth largest city in the country. It's also the second cleanest, and has been named by Money Sense magazine as the best Canadian city to call home. Many Canadians know Ottawa as the centre of national politics, but it is also home to numerous post-secondary education institutions, the National Gallery and the lively, eclectic Byward Market. Situated on the Ottawa River and bordering the Gatineau region of Quebec, Ottawa is one of the country's most bilingual cities, with 37% of residents speaking both English and French. Additionally, 20% of residents cite a language other than English or French as their mother tongue. Languages in that category include Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and many others. Yes, Ottawa is chilly in the winter, with average temperatures of -14 C in January. Residents do well to embrace the snow and ice in winter months, whether by ice skating on the Rideau Canal or skiing at some of the nearby slopes. Summers are hot and humid, a great time of year to enjoy the many bike and walking trails running through the city. The Ottawa River is also a popular spot for whitewater canoeing and rafting.

With low unemployment and a very high standard of living, this picturesque city is both an economic and cultural centre, boasting a national hockey team, the National Arts Centre and several well-known festivals, such as the Tulip Festival and Winterlude.
