There is a lot of excitement percolating out there for the long-awaited 2020 Jeep Gladiator and you’ll want to be ahead of the game. Because after the Canadian launch, it’s going to be a long wait to keep-up with your obnoxious neighbour, Dave. You know Dave. He’s the guy who is first-on-the block to get the newest model of anything and then spends the next six months washing it, every day, in his driveway. Delivery is the end of March, so act now.

We’ve been waiting since the 1980s for a new truck offering from Jeep and no one would argue that is too long to wait for anything. While we were hoping for and expecting a remake of the Scrambler, Jeep pleasantly surprised us with a behemoth of a truck, aptly named the Gladiator. The Scrambler sounds more like your local diner’s Saturday egg special, but the Gladiator reeks of respect and power. It’s a beast of a name for a beast of a truck. It can tow 7,650 pounds of trailer and offers 1,600 lbs of payload. While it can gobble up the 401 like your brother-in-law at a buffet, it really shows its audacity off-road.

The Gladiator’s approach and departure angles have a huge advantage over the other guys’. The rugged Rubicon stands tall on its 33-inch tires and lifted suspension. If you want to go even higher, aftermarket 35-inch tires promise the extra height you need, without a lift. There’s even room for a 35-inch spare. The Gladiator offsets its longer wheelbase with superior ground clearance. The breakover is 18.4 degrees on the Sport and Overland trims and the Rubicon is up for 20.3 degrees. The mid-size truck has 11.1 inches of ground clearance and can slog it through 30 inches of water.

The Gladiator boasts Wrangler's familiar 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The turbocharged 2.0-liter eTorque engine will not be offered, but a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 that creates a beastly 442 lb-ft of torque is on order for late next year. Jeep offers you a standard six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed automatic.

On the back end is a 5 foot steel bed with integrated tie downs, a 115-volt three-prong plug and tonneau cover. If you select a spray-in bed liner, you'll also get under-rail bed lighting. The bed box sides are purposely low for easily accessible loading and unloading. And who wouldn't want that? Even your Aunt Phyllis could manage it, and what is she? Barely 5ft? As well, the three-position tailgate allows you to carry 20 sheets of 4x8 plywood or drywall, flat. That's pretty darn convenient, wouldn't you say? You can’t see the spare tire, because it hangs underneath, between the frame rails, giving you more room for a high-strength steel truck bed that does what trucks do best. This brute is about to become your new best friend on the worksite.

The Gladiator offers the same solid front and rear axle configuration of a Wrangler, but the bigger loads associated with towing and hauling require some heftier additions. You can expect all trims from Sport on-up to use third-generation Dana 44 axles, both front and rear. The Gladiator gets heavier duty rear brakes and the link geometry on the rear axle's suspension has been tinkered with, in a good way. Its rear shock absorbers tilt forward, ahead of the axle, instead of pointing backwards. This should deliver a smoother ride because the weight now shifts toward the middle of the vehicle, which is a big improvement from its predecessor. A smoother ride will take care of your wife’s argument that for all the time you spend on the highway, you should really consider something a little more four-door-family. This way everyone is happy! Especially you.

Looking at the esthetics of the Gladiator, we see the familiar Wrangler design. The circular headlights, seven-slot grille and square taillights are a welcome return. For those who love the open air, the truck also has Wrangler's removable aluminum doors, soft or hardtops and fold-down windshield.

Inside the cab we find a horizontal dash with trapezoidal end, plenty of storage nooks, rubber-coated touch points and metal-plated trim. The slightly more spendy Overland models have accent-stitched, wrap-around instrument panels. Rear of the cab seats can be folded down, giving you more storage and secure storage areas are located behind the seat backs.

For a rough and ready pickup, it also showcases some pretty fine tech features. Depending on the trim you select, the fourth-generation Uconnect system offers the selection of a 5, 7 or 8.4-inch touch display and will also support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

As for safety features, this mid-sized pickup offers blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and a backup camera with dynamic grid lines.

Jeep offers you four top-notch trims to choose from: Sport, Sport S, Overland and Rubicon. The Overland takes over where the Sahara left off, but you’ll recognize its similarities.
