Buzz for the Ram Mid-Sized Pickup and The Jeep Scrambler | Toronto & Mississauga

Just because you live in Mississauga, Toronto or Oakville doesn’t mean you don’t really want a pickup truck. A quick glance at the parking lot at work or the mall speaks volumes: trucks aren’t just for country life.  City dwellers have been in love with trucks for years now, but the pickup segment is on fire, with Ram 1500s flying out the door here at the dealership. I never thought I’d say this, but if I had room for a second vehicle, I’d opt for a shiny pickup of my own. Which is why it’s so exciting that Ram keeps teasing us with the possibility of a mid-sized pickup, and Jeep Wrangler has been slow-cooking up the Scrambler. But when can we get our hands on these rumour-mill all-stars?

The Ram mid-size is playing a little hard to get, it’s true, but making an entrance really matters. And in a market full of players, Ram likes to do things just right. Cowboy style. The Jeep Wrangler pickup, the Scrambler is expected on the market in 2019. Whispers of sightings on the notorious Rubicon Trail, spy shots from the automotive paparazzi: we’re kind of going crazy over here with anticipation. The fact that it may or may not be named after my favourite childhood midway ride just adds to the fun. And yes, I would like to see a Cherokee and a Scrambler in my driveway. A gal can never have too many useful vehicles. Just think how much better apple-picking season would be with this sweet little number heading for the local pick-your-own orchard! (Full disclosure: I buy the pre-picked bushels. Ladders and I do not get along—but I do love orchards.)
As for the mid-sized Ram, we’ve heard some buzz on a 2021 model hitting the asphalt in 2020. With a body-on-frame construction that may or may not be built at the Toledo plant, alongside cousin Jeep Scrambler. But getting details on this elusive Ram is like trying to find out where your teenager has been all evening when they come home wearing only one shoe. Pulling teeth, right? Not since the Dodge Dakota snuck off in 2011 has Dodge had a mid-size offering. FCA spokesfolk said for a long time they didn’t need anything smaller than the 1500, but there’s something brewing in the cool autumn air.
Speculation tends to run wild when you’re short on facts, but it seems likely we’ll see turbo four-cylinder and V-6 engine options to match the competition in this segment. In other markets around the world, small trucks are hugely popular, and it seems logical that in parking-challenged Toronto, a smaller pickup would be a massive hit. Sensible for carting your gear, and a treat for those of you with street-only parking. But wishing won’t make it so, and we’ll have to wait with our fingers crossed and reminisce about the very first Ram truck, which was in fact, on the lighter side of the pickup offerings when it debuted in 1981.
You may associate Ram trucks with big, hunky bruisers like this good old boy. I can’t lie. I sat behind one of these at the carwash one afternoon and drank in its every exquisite detail from bumper to badges. The fact that the truck did not really need to be washed did not matter. It was glorious. And the man driving it looked like he knew it, and he didn’t seem bothered by how massive it was. It’s a truck that says hello. That day, gleaming in the sun outside the touchless carwash, it also said, Keep back, little lady. (We hadn’t yet bought our new Jeep. Now it’s me giving people the “Back away from my awesome car!” look at the carwash.) The mid-size Ram pickup will be a big win for truck lovers who just want a great truck that doesn’t require experience with an 18-wheeler to park.
Not all Rams were numbered. The fourth generation Ram pickup didn’t become the legendary 1500 till 2008, and it’s been steadily gaining ground since the first real Ram heyday of the 90s. Popularity kept building. Then came the 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500, the latter models mainly used for commercial vehicles. Other rumours flying around the Ram mid-size-to-be are that the Dakota name might be resurrected. Might? Just tell us when, boys! I don’t want to sound impatient. You can’t hurry love, as the Supremes used to sing.
Wrangler lovers are just as keen to see the Scrambler, which sounds set to combine the best of the popular Jeep model’s playfulness with pickup practicality.  It’s been twenty-five long years since Jeep gave us a pickup. Before that, and starting in 1947, pickups were a Jeep staple: think the Willys-Overland 4×4. The Comanche of 1992 was the last Jeep pickup truck, but buzz, buzz, buzz: she’s back again. New name, new game. Track shots from Michigan. Teaser details here and there: based on the Wrangler design. Short rear bed. Spare tire hidden underneath the bed. Stronger axle, engine options carried over from the Wrangler. A suspension derived from big bro Wrangler. Engine option to carry over, too. Tease, tease, tease! But it won’t be long now.
Other tidbits we’ve managed to squeeze out of those in the know: the Scrambler will include 3.6L ESS and 3.6L turbo diesel engine options, and manual and automatic transmission options. Note to self: learn to drive stick before Spring 2019. (Right after I learn Spanish and calculus.) Much like the Wrangler, the Scrambler pickup will feature more aluminum panels that save some weight but still offer reasonable hauling capacity and that off-road capability Jeep lovers demand. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and an eight-speed automatic is likely to be the mainstream powertrain choice, but (more gossip?) an eTorque hybrid may be added later.
