Is the Chrysler Pacifica All-Wheel Drive?
Rumour has it an all-wheel drive Chrysler Pacifica will roll off Windsor’s line in the second quarter of 2020. This should step up competition with the Toyota Sienna, currently the only minivan with AWD.
I know I am preaching to the choir here, but Canada’s winters are long and harsh. For 14 months out of every year, we have snow and sleet and snow squalls and ice storms and snow storms and snow flurries and snow men and freezing temperatures and grey skies and numb digits and…and…and…sorry, I digress. But seriously…we have winter with a capital ‘W’ and AWD just makes it all a whole lot easier to survive the season in body AND spirit.
Head of product planning at FCA Canada, Mike Szymkiewicz, wouldn’t comment on whether or not FCA was going ahead with the AWD Pacifica, but did say the AWD is a prominent selling feature on any vehicle offering it.
“I think it’s definitely an opportunity with our market,” he said. “If you look at some of the competitive vehicles, maybe not the traditional minivan, but even some of the bigger duty [trucks] you can get front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive take rate generally is quite high in all those offerings. I do think it would be an opportunity for us.”
Toyota Canada’s stats show that 58 per cent of Sienna minivans sold across the U.S. last year included the AWD system. That’s a telling number that shouldn’t be disregarded.
Some question remains as to whether the Pacifica could sport both the Stow ‘n Go seat storage and AWD—but that’s what engineers are for. Let’s see what they come up with.
The Windsor plant currently assembles the Caravan and the front-wheel-drive Pacifica as well as its hybrid plug-in version and we believe the AWD would feel right at home there.
